Object statement
Booklet, Sydney 2000 Access Guide to the Olympic and Paralympic Games, paper, disabled access, spectator services, Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games, published by the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, Sydney 2000.
Titled Sydney 2000 Access Guide to the Olympic and Paralympic Games, this spiral-bound booklet was published to assist disabled spectators at the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Its contents include transport information, venue information, removable maps, relevant contact details and general tips for planning a day at the events. In addition, it lists specific services for disabled spectators, such as clear and consistent signage; hearing services; accessible food, merchandise and ticket outlets; wheelchair accessible buses, toilets and telephones; and provisions for guide dogs.
Also published in braille, audio and large print, the Access Guide was distributed to the public through the Royal Blind Society. Similar information services included the Sydney 2000 Access website, the Sydney 2000 Disability Information and Referral Service and a host of smaller publications referring to specific disabilities. Together, these reflected Sydney's commitment to set new benchmarks in providing access for disabled people and in broadening the term, 'disabled', to encompass the elderly, families with young children and people with temporary disabilities. At least 9 per cent of spectators at the Olympic Games and 15 per cent of spectators at the Paralympic Games had disabled access requirements.
The Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games designed this booklet in around 2000. Dot Dash of Brisbane designed the maps and other navigational tools while the colour palette and graphic designs came from the Sydney 2000 Image Guidelines.
The Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games published this book in around 2000 to serve disabled spectators at the Sydney Olympic and Paralympic Games. The book was also available in braille, in a large print format and on audio cassette.
This is an example of the publications that the Royal Blind Society distributed in 2000 to assist disabled spectators at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
