Object statement
Map and schedule, Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch Relay, paper, designed by SOCOG, Sydney New South Wales, c.2000
This is an example of the coloured maps that AMP and Shell distributed in 2000 to promote the Sydney Olympic torch relay and its 100-day tour of Australia. The maps were acquired free of charge at Shell outlets before and during the event. Today, the maps reflect the vast number souvenirs that marked the torch relay, particularly the disposable ephemera designed to arouse immediate rather than enduring public interest.

In 1998, SOCOG and its Torch Relay Division modelled a relay route that would highlight Australia's history, people, geography and multicultural achievements. Designed to awaken the Olympic spirit, the relay would pass within an hour's drive of 85 per cent of all Australians (some 17 million people), and would visit all States, capital cities and over 1000 communities. By employing around 40 different modes of transport, it would penetrate vast areas of regional Australia as well as many remote locations.

The finalisation of the Torch Relay route initiated a promotional campaign that would raise public awareness in the event. In addition, select sponsors and manufacturers, including Shell and AMP, aligned with SOCOG to develop official souvenirs and promotional ephemera.
Made for distribution at Shell outlets during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch Relay.
Unused. Owned by the Olympic Coordination Authority/Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, and donated to the Powerhouse Museum.
