Object statement
Pin set with packaging, commemorating Murray Rose, Olympic Games, Sydney, 2000, enamel/metal/paper/satin, made by Aminco 1997, Australia
This limited edition pin set was manufactured by Cash's Aminco in 1997 as a souvenir of the coming Sydney Olympic Games. Titled "Murray Rose - Australian Olympic Legend", it comprises five numbered pins that commemorate Australian swimming champion, Murray Rose, and his 1956 and 1960 Olympic victories. Featuring black and white photographs and samples of Rose's DNA, they demonstrate the contemporary demand for unique pin designs and allude to the pin-trading culture that flourished in Sydney because of the Games.

The recent phenomenon of Olympic pin trading, including its informal code of etiquette and distinction between collectors, amateur traders and experienced traders, developed vigorously after the 1980 Lake Placid Games. Twenty years later, the Sydney 2000 Olympics inspired the production of around 3, 500 collector pins, and became the venue for serious and recreational pin trading. Only four pin manufacturers - Benson House, Cash's Aminco, Lamphil and TrofÂ? Australia, produced official pins for the 2000 Olympic Games. By adopting the Atlanta pin coding system, they stamped each pin with a unique six-digit number - the first digit signifying the year of manufacture, the last digit signifying the production limit code, and the four middle digits representing an individual pin.
