Sports programs and plastic slipcase, (29), Olympic Games, Sydney, 2000, designed by Pacific Client Publishing Sydney, published by the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG), Sydney 2000
This series of 29 soft-cover books, titled 'Collector's Set of Official Olympic Games Sports Programs', was published in 2000 by the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games. Each edition represents one of the twenty-eight Olympic sports while a special edition documents Olympic swimming. The range of topics covered in each edition is diverse, and includes cursory chapters on Australian culture, Olympic history, sports history, Sydney 2000 Olympic venues and qualifying athletes. The entire set, including its grey, plastic slipcase, retailed in 2000 for AUD$399 plus AUD$16 for postage and handling. (SOCOG sold two similar sets of the 'Official Olympic Games Sports Programs'. The Prestige Collector's set, which sold for AUD$515, was limited to 10,000 copies and was authenticated by the former Australian Olympian, Murray Rose. The Chairman's Library set, which was limited to 100 copies, was both signed and authenticated Murray Rose.)
Designed by Pacific Client Publishing of Sydney, the covers combine many of the graphic designs that identified the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Their two-tone vignettes, in four similar styles, come from the Sydney 2000 branding package and reference the Australian landscape. Titled 'Marine', 'Sunset', 'Sky' and 'Aqua', they blend colours from the Sydney 2000 colour palette - orange, yellow, aqua, lime, purple, rubine and blue - and offset silver, water-like images that represent athletes participating in Olympic sports. Blended into the vignettes is the motif, 'Fluid Energy', symbolising the Olympic rings reflected in the waters of Sydney Harbour. The Sydney 2000 trademark, 'Millennium Man', appears at the top of each cover.
Conveying a sense of youth, energy and optimism, the Sydney 2000 branding package, or 'kit of parts', unified and enlivened all visual components of the Sydney Olympic Games. Developed in 1998 by the Look of the Games Committee, it contained both major and minor branding elements, including the Sydney 2000 trademark, the 'Fluid Energy' motif, a colour palette, typography, mascots, vignettes and pictograms. Individually, these elements referenced Australian culture and landscapes, and branded the Olympic Games with a uniquely Australian theme.
