Object statement
Venue decorations (2), Olympic rings, Sydney Equestrian Centre, polystyrene, Olympic Games, Sydney, 2000, made by the Image Department, used at the Sydney Equestrian Centre 15 September to 1 October 2000
Cut from polystyrene sheets, these yellow Olympic rings were used in conjunction with several similar examples to decorate the main arena at the Equestrian centre for the Sydney Olympic Games. A stone wall surrounding the arena was considered too attractive to be covered with the coreflute fascia panels that decorated most other Games venues. Consequently, the polystyrene Olympic rings and similar 'Sydney 2000' trademarks were attached to the wall, increasing the Olympic atmosphere for live spectators and the television audience.

From 15 September to 1 October 2000, the Sydney Equestrian Centre hosted individual dressage, team dressage, individual jumping, team jumping and cross country events. Here, spectators witnessed a range of distinctive decorations on the fields of play, including the polystyrene attachments and horse jumps representing Australian icons, like Ned Kelly, the Opera House and Federation architecture. These latter designs were developed outside the Image Department that designed the banners, corrals, fascia panels, flags and signage for all other sports arenas.
These polystyrene decorations were designed to attach to the stone wall surrounding the main equestrian arena at the Sydney Olympic Games. The decorations represent the five Olympic rings.

The Image Department cut these decorations from thin sheets of polystyrene and then applied yellow paint to the surface.
