Banner (2), venue decoration, Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, polyester, designed by the Look of the Games Committee, made c. 2000 by Selby's Flags & Banners of Sydney or Dot Dash of Brisbane, used to decorate the Hindmarsh Stadium, Adelaide from 13 to 23 September 2000.
These two polyester banners, 'Adelaide Olympic Games Football' and 'Sydney 2000', decorated the Adelaide Hindmarsh Stadium when it hosted Olympic soccer from 13 to 23 September 2000. Six preliminary matches and a men's quarterfinal were held at this stadium, which seated 20,000 spectators (5,000 seats were installed for the duration of the Games). Soccer was the only sport of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games to be played at venues outside of Sydney - additional soccer matches were held at Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne.
Designed by the Look of the Games Committee, the banners represent the Sydney 2000 branding package, or kit of parts, that unified and enlivened all visual components of the Games. Their colours - Sydney blue, Sydney aqua and Sydney white - reflect the Sydney 2000 colour palette, while their trajan binary typeface and Fluid Energy motif represent other key branding elements. The banners would have been made by one of two Australian companies, either Selby's Flags & Banners of Sydney or Dot Dash of Brisbane, which made most banners and fence fabric for the Games.
Developed in 1998, the kit of parts contained major and minor branding elements including the trademark, 'Millennium Man' (a human figure formed from three boomerangs), the 'Fluid Energy' motif (a concentric design signifying the Olympic rings reflected in Sydney Harbour), a colour palette, typography, mascots, vignettes and pictograms. Individually, these elements referenced Australian culture and landscapes, and branded the Olympic Games with a uniquely Australian theme. The kit was applied to all three dimensional objects that propped Olympic venues, including signage, temporary architecture, fence fabric, banners and banner poles, press backdrops, the 'kiss and cry' area for gymnasts, and sports equipment.
