Object statement
Ephemera, including guides, booklets, manuals, folders and a CD Rom, paper/plastic/metal, published by the Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee, Paralympic Games, Sydney, 2000
Supporting the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games was a detailed network of personnel and organisations that worked for or interacted with the Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee. This selection of guides, dossiers and manuals reflects this relationship as well as the many formal procedures that ranged from flag protocols to drug testing. Printed by the Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee, the documents reflect the extensive work Sydney undertook as host of the Paralympic Games.

The Sydney Paralympic Games ran from 18 to 29 October 2000, uniting 125 countries, over 4000 athletes and 18 separate sports. Four organisations were central to the Games' development and despite their independence, they were all assembled under the one banner of 'Sydney 2000'. These organisations were the Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee (SPOC); the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG); the Olympic Coordinating Authority (OCA) and the Olympic Roads and Transport Authority (ORTA). Of these four organisations, SPOC carried the principal responsibility of planning and staging the Paralympic Games in accordance with its contract with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).
The majority of this material features elements of the Paralympic Games branding package that was designed in early 1999 by Australian Company, FHA Image Design. Key branding elements included an emblem; colour palette; angled headings; geometric and outlined typefaces; background textures alluding to water, grass, sand and sports equipment; and cropped and blurred photographs of Paralympians. Optimistic statements, such as "success is a choice", embellished posters, pamphlets and documents. Together, these were designed to symbolise "power, performance and pursuit".

This collection of mostly paper-based items ranges in manufacture and style. The majority of this material was published by the Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee between early 1999 and 2000.
These official guides, dossiers, manuals and other documentation were published by the Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee to provide sponsors and personnel with official information ranging from flag protocols and branding regulations to sports schedules and parking procedures.

Made for and owned by the Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee and donated to the Powerhouse Museum after the Games.
