First torch light globe made in Australia, 1965
zoom image

Object statement
Light globe, torch, 2.5 V, glass / metal, made by Electric Lamp Manufacturers (Australia) Pty Ltd, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, 1965
This tiny light globe was made specially for use in a torch (flashlight). It is reputed to have been the first one made at the Newcastle, New South Wales, factory of Electric Lamp Manufacturers (Australia) Pty Ltd. This company began making light globes in 1931, but it did not begin making torch globes until 1965. Probably due to the import of cheap torches, it ceased making such globe sin 1967.

Hand-held electric torches only became possible with the development of the dry cell battery in 1896. Earlier batteries had liquid electrolytes and so were not suitable for powering portable devices.

Debbie Rudder, Curator, 2011
This is reputed to have been the first torch globe made at the Newcastle factory of Electric Lamp Manufacturers (Australia) Pty Ltd. The factory only produced torch globes for a short time, from 1965 to about 1967.
The globe was obtained by lamp collector Fin Stewart from a small museum in GEC's headquarters in Clarence Street, Sydney, where it was tagged as the first made at the ELMA factory.
