Lace length fragment, Valenciennes lace border, bobbin lace technique, linen, Belgium, 1850-1900
Solid areas of the design are worked in cloth stitch with open edge and various ornamental openings within. Extra threads have been added to all cloth stitch areas and cut out at either end of each motif, as the characteristic plaited ground is too open to provide sufficient threads on its own.

A lace length fragment, Valenciennces lace, bobbin lace technique, made of linen which consists of a scalloped edge and a floral design. Design consists of floral sprays arranged longitudinally and curving to fill the scalloped with a 'spotted' mesh ground. The solid areas of the design are worked in cloth stitch with open edge and carious ornamental opening with. Extra treads have been added to all cloth stitch areas and cut out at either end of each motif, as the characteristic plaited ground is too open to provided sufficient threads on its own. The addition of extra threads in the clothwork is characteristic of Nineteenth Century Valenciennces laces. Length of lace is made of linen threads.
