'Grael' polysomnography (PSG) device, 2008

Object statement
Polysomnography device, 'Grael', plastic / metal / electrical cord / paper, designed by Outerspace Design, made by Compumedics Ltd, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 2008
The Grael is an advanced polysomnogram (PSG) device that can measure physiological variables to help diagnose respiratory and neurological sleep disorders. It can detect, amplify and record such signals as EEG, EOG, EMG, ECG, pressure, airflow, snore, respiratory effort, body position, limb movement, oxygen saturation, pulse rate and pulse waveform.

Its light weight (800g) and integrated lanyard provide portability, and the one-touch power and data disconnect allows the patient to take the Grael with them when they leave the room. With other systems, patients are literally tethered to their beds and leaving requires disconnecting an array of sensors.

The Grael demonstrates excellence in Australian product design, software and electronics design - it received an Australian International Design Mark and Powerhouse Museum Design Award in 2009. It also represents ongoing innovation by Compumedics, an Australian company with more than 20 years experience in sleep disorder diagnosis.

Designed by Outerspace Design and Compumedics Ltd, Melbourne, Vic. Made by Compumedics Ltd, 2008.

The device is designed to continuously, simultaneously and sensitively detect and record up to 60 parameters or physiological variables used to diagnose respiratory and neurological sleep disorders. It can detect, amplify and record such signals as EEG, EOG, EMG, ECG, pressure, airflow, snore, respiratory effort, body position, limb movement, oxygen saturation, pulse rate and pulse waveform. The unit is used in conjunction with a range of sensors and is connected via Ethernet to a standard PC running Compumedics Profusion software to store and analyse vast amounts of data.
Winner of an Australian International Design Mark and the Powerhouse Museum Design Award in 2009.

This object was displayed in the Australian International Design Awards exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum from July 2009 to June 2010 and subsequently donated to the Museum.

This device has been deactivated and cannot be turned on or used. It contains all the internal components of an activated machine.
