Object statement
Collector card, featuring Harold Parsons, cardboard, Allen's, Australia, 1927-1930
Harold (Ranji) Parsons was a Victorian motorcycle rider who accomplished much in a brief career as a motorcycle rider before his untimely death in 1921. He was only one of two riders in very wet conditions to finish the Marysville Trial held on the 24 September 1916, coming second on a Harley-Davidson. He then secured the 10 mile, 25 mile, 50 mile, 200 miles and 3 hour records at Mortlake on 3rd January 1917. On 19th October Parsons won the Hillclimb at Buttlejork on another Indian, (8-valve), as well the sideclass class. At the 1919 Easter Carnival at Mortlake Parsons was the "scratchman". He burned his led badly on the open ported 8-valve Indian motorcycle event though he had a sheet of asbestos wrapped around his limb for protection and spent a few days in the Mortlake Hospital.
By 1920 Parsons was a professional rider employed by the Rhodes Motorcycle Co. and he broke the Adelaide to Melbourne record on an Indian and sidecar with a time of 19 hours and 20 minutes over roads which were little more than tracks through the desert. Parsons went on to break the World 24 hour road record on 26 August 1920, on a 596 cc Indian "Scout" at the Sale circuit.
Tragically Harold Parson was killed on 16 May 1921 when he hit a stray horse testing a new Indian "Daytona" motorcycle on Epping Road. He was regarded as the world's most versatile rider and a memorial drinking fountain was later erected on 24 June 1923 to his memory on the corner of Punt Road and Swan Street, Richmond in Victoria.
