Description
Vessel (unguentarium), glass, maker unknown, Roman empire, 1st and 2nd century
This vessel was made from green glass and demonstrates a creamy white colour on the exterior (probably patina). Parts of the creamy white surface has flaked off, particularly around the rim and the lower part of the squat body which reveals a dark opalescent colour beneath. The shape demonstrates a rounded and solid globular body which allows only the cavity of the long constricted neck to be used. Because the body has been entirely filled in the vessel is quite heavy. The neck which is long, flares slightly into a splayed, irregular, inward folded rim. A pontil mark is noted on base.
