This series of drawings for a modest family home in Vaucluse provide an insight into the design and layout of middle class housing in Sydney at the time.
Artist and/or designer unknown.
This comes from the estate of Raymond W Phillips. His father, Arthur, had been a gold and silver merchant. In 1920 the family moved from Willoughby to Latimer Road, Bellevue Hill. A bachelor, Raymond Phillips remained in the house after his parents' death. He worked for Consolidated Press as a rotogravure operator and was responsible for the covers of the Australian Women's Weekly.

Architectural drawings (3), house at Vaucluse, pen and ink on paper / card, artist unknown, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 1924-1930

Rough sketch plan of cottage, on a single sheet, with two suggested plans. Dated 4 August 1930.
At top, two water colour views of the front of the proposed cottage, and below, two floor plans, each for a two bedroom house, both with front verandah and side entrance, back porch. On buff cardboard, rolled, once pinned in top corners.

On thin tracing paper, inscription in black India ink 'rough sketch of Cottage for Mr Phillip, size approximate only'.
At top, longwise, pen and ink sketch of house, front veranda, 2 chimneys, for a duplex. At bottom: 27/12/24, and initials of architect.
Rough edges.

Hand coloured version of Cottage for Mr Philip, on tracing paper, fixed with pin between two strips of cardboard, pinned at top.
Front, in blue crayon, is inscription 'Sketch Plan of Cottages for Mrs Phillips'. Centre sheet, thin tracing paper, at top a water colour view of front elevation of duplex, and below, drawing of the layout of the duplex, with dimensions. At bottom is inscription 'Pavement in O'Sullivan Road Plan 1/8" scale. 12/12/24'.
