'Hong Kong Qantas' poster designed by Harry Rogers for Qantas, 1960 - 1970
zoom image

Object statement
Poster, airline advertising, 'Hong Kong Qantas', colour lithograph on paper, designed by Harry Rogers for Qantas, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 1970-1980
The production and use of posters to promote airlines and their operations has remained an integral part of various airlines' advertising campaigns despite inroads made recently by the electronic media.

This poster designed by Harry Rogers was one of a series commissioned by Qantas as part of a successful advertising campaign promoting overseas destinations to Australian travellers. Rogers enjoyed a long and productive association with Qantas as a freelance designer. He devised many different and unusual techniques for each different poster series; starting in the 50s through to the 70s, incorporating a variety of styles such as geometrics, watercolours, collage work, and oils. Rogers' designs were innovative, utilising the latest in printing, typesetting and photo technology. The posters produced for Qantas made use of bold, readily identifiable images and vivid colours that were typical of the period.
This poster, designed by Harry Rogers at Rogers Galbraith, was produced for Qantas as part of a successful advertising campaign promoting Qantas as Australia's premier international carrier.
The success of Rogers poster designs ensured a long association between Qantas and Rogers. Rogers' work with Qantas arose through his association with renowned graphic artist, Gert Sellheim, who had designed Qantas' winged kangaroo symbol which first appeared in 1947. Roger's actually succeeded Sellheim as Qantas' preferred freelance graphic designer.
Poster used by Qantas as an advertising and promotional device.
