Poster, 'Mutant Materials in Contemporary Design', by MAP, 1996

Object statement
Poster, 'Mutant Materials in Contemporary Design', digitally designed offset print on paper, designed by Greg Van Alstyne, Museum of Modern Art, New York City, New York, United States of America, 1995
This poster is of particularly significance to Australia as the MAP's 'Pepe Chair' was the only design to feature on the posters advertising the New York's Museum of Modern Art 'Mutant Materials in Contemporary Design' exhibition held in 1995.

MAP (Merchants of Australian Products) was established in Melbourne in 1989. Run by internationally acclaimed designers Christopher Connell (b.1955) and Raoul Hogg (b.1955), the company employs a holistic approach to design that includes research and development, selection of materials, manufacture and marketing of an extensive range of furniture. MAP furniture and objects are noted for designs that combine wit and humour with function and style.

MAP has collaborated with the Powerhouse Museum on a number of projects aimed at introducing students of design and technology to the work of both professional and student designers. The poster adds context to the MAP objects represented in the MuseumÂ?s collection of contemporary design and Australian furniture.

In a period of increased outsourcing of local designs to overseas manufacturers, this poster featuring the Â?Light ChairÂ? (Â?Pepe ChairÂ?) designed and made by MAP, represents a successful design partnership that continues to design and locally manufacture furniture and objects that combine innovation, enduring style and functionality with a quirky sense of fun.
Poster produced using Quark Xpress and Photoshop. The designer of the poster has digitally composited a macro photograph of raw polymer beads with a silhouette of the Australian-designed injection-moulded polyurethane 'Pepe Chair' by MAP.

This poster was produced to advertise the New York's Museum of Modern Art 'Mutant Materials in Contemporary Design' exhibition held in 1995. The chair featured on this poster is the 'Pepe' designed by Australian designer, Christopher Connell which is a CFC free molded flexible polyurethane foam, mild steel frame, sprung back and upholstered in 100% wool.

MAP (Merchants of Australian Products) was established in Melbourne in 1989. Run by designers Christopher Connell and Raoul Hogg, the company not only continues to design but also manufactures and markets an extensive range of furniture. Interior design is another aspect of its operation. MAP furniture is sold through outlets in most capital cities as well as in Wellington, New Zealand and has featured in numerous exhibitions, including New York's Museum of Modern Art 'Mutant Materials in Contemporary Design'. The 'Pepe Chair' and the 'Plaky Table' were two MAP designs featured in the MoMA exhibition.
This poster is the only design used to advertise New York's Museum of Modern Art 'Mutant Materials in Contemporary Design' exhibition held in 1995 . The 'Pepe' chair is one of two MAP designs shown in that exhibition.

The 'Pepe Chair' featured on this poster was on display in the Design Gallery in 1997 as part of The Powerhouse Museum's inaugural Sydney Design Week in association with Â?MAP: Merchants of Australian ProductÂ? exhibition.
