'The Blundstone Shoe' poster, 1996
zoom image

Object statement
Poster, 'The Blundstone Shoe', paper, designer and design date unknown, produced by Blundstone Australia Pty Ltd., Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, 1990-1996
Blundstone Australia Pty Lty is an Australian family owned business committed to providing durable leather footwear. The company was established in 1870, with head office and manufacturing plant in Hobart, Tasmania.

This rather joyful and lighthearted poster captures the essence and 'soul' of the company's dedication to providing 'stylish, serviceable and durable' Australian footwear. It also proudly points to the company's long standing presence within the Australian manufacturing sector by featuring the historical Blundstone & Son Ltd Hobart boot factory.

Blundstone shoes have acquired iconic status in Australia culminating in their inclusion with several of the outfits worn during the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. The Museum's collection includes examples of those worn at the Olympic as well as other pairs of Blundstone boots.

Despite its remote location, the company has remained competitive in the market, partly due to the ongoing popularity and success of its footwear which allows it to manufacture on a scale that supports highly automated, and therefore quite efficient, methods of production.
The poster was produced by Blundstone Australia between 1990-1996. It represents an historical and nostalgic approach to promoting a product with a long and popular local history.
