Negative number 5271. Photograph from negative appears on page 94 of the book with the caption "Paddington, an old inner suburb east of the city, has lately been transformed from a rundown slum to a quarter of charmingly restored town houses. Mostly built between 1860 and 1900, the terrace homes of Paddington are lavishly garnished with iron lace and other Victorian furbelows. Corner boutiques and art galleries ... Continental delicatessens and restaurants ... thousands of foreign-born residents ... and some endearingly tatty leftovers from its slummy days ... all these add up to an area of sparkling character. Built on a hillside overlooking the Harbour, catching the summer breezes, Paddington appeals to citizens of romantic heart, who resist strongly any attempts to carve up or knock down their four hundred acrea of treasured Victoriana. PATRICIA THOMPSON"
