Pair of mens beige trousers by Jil Sander, 1990 - 1999

Object statement
Trousers, mens, cotton nylon spandex blend / metal / plastic, designed and made by Jil Sander, Italy, worn by Paul Jellard, Australia, 1990s
Jil Sander (b. 1943) studied textiles and started her career as a fashion journalist in America and Germany. She opened her first boutique in Hamburg in 1968 and showed her first collection in 1973. Her company was converted to a public corporation in 1989 and in 1999 it was purchased by Prada. In 2003 she returned to take control of Jil Sander and produced a ready to wear collection for spring/summer 2004. Sander has always had a modern sensibility and her style has been described as luxurious minimalism, everything irrelevant is eliminated. She first introduced a menswear line in 1993. This consisted of clothes that felt comfortable and looked powerful.

This pair of trousers was owned and used by Paul Jellard (d 2002) a Sydney based fashion retailer who opened the ground breaking boutique 'Five Way Fusion' in Paddington. The store sold imported men's wear and transformed not only the look of many of Sydney's males but also the way Sydney men shopped. Jellard often purpose-bought with a specific client's requirements in mind and he also introduced a maintenance service.
These trousers were made for the Jil Sander label in Italy.
