Pair of olive green trousers by Comme des Garcons
zoom image

Object statement
Trousers, mens, polyester / plastic, designed by Rei Kawakubo, made by Comme des Garcons, Japan, worn by Paul Jellard, Australia, 1990s
Designed by Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons, Japan. Kawakubo was born in 1942 in Japan. She studied aesthetics at Toyko's Keio University and worked for a number of years in advertising before establishing her Comme des Garcons fashion label in 1973. Kawakubo, along with other Japanese designers, Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto challenged and stunned the fashion establishment in the early 1980s with collections of clothing that re-defined western notions of dress. Instead of formal, tailored body revealing forms the Japanese designers showed oversize, assymetrical, unstructured, layered shapes in distressed and reworked fabrics. They approached the cutting, construction, fabric and concept of fashion in a new way and worked in advertising until her Comme des Garcons label was established in 1973. Kawakubo's garments are typically oversized, layered and often made from irregular or unusual fabrics. Comme des Garcons has been producing mens fashion since 1978.

This pair of trousers was owned and used by Paul Jellard (d 2002) a Sydney based fashion retailer who opened the ground breaking boutique 'Five Way Fusion' in Paddington. The store sold imported men's wear and transformed not only the look of many of Sydney's males but also the way Sydney men shopped. Jellard often purpose-bought with a specific client's requirements in mind and he also introduced a maintenance service.
