Born in Hiroshima in 1938, Issey Miyake belongs to the first generation of Japanese artists, designers and architects who came of age and attained international stature after the Second World War. He is a leading international fashion designer whose garments are often inspired by aspects of Japanese tradition, culture and aesthetics. Since establishing the Miyake Design Studio in Tokyo in 1970, he has consistently researched materials and technologies. His approach to clothing combines a respect for tradition with technological experimentation. The current head designer for Issey Miyake Inc is Naoki Takizawa (b.1960) who joined the studio in 1982 after studying at Kuwasawa Design Institute in Tokyo. He worked with Miyake during the 1980s and 1990s working on menswear and women's apparel and in 1992 took over menswear. Throughout the 1990s he designed sophisticated yet comfortable clothing, cut to be 'not so big, but not so tight' according to Takizawa. He also created an extensive range of shoes and boots that were meant to be fun and comfortable. Takizawa has been head designer since 1999 taking over from Issey Miyake who immersed himself in other projects.

This jacket was owned and used by Paul Jellard (d 2002) a Sydney based fashion retailer who opened the ground breaking boutique 'Five Way Fusion' in Paddington. The store sold imported men's wear and transformed not only the look of many of Sydney's males but also the way Sydney men shopped. Jellard often purpose-bought with a specific client's requirements in mind and he also introduced a maintenance service.

After graduating with a degree in graphic design in Japan, Miyake was apprenticed to the Parisienne haute couture houses of Guy Larouch and Givenchy in the 1960s. The student riots in Paris at the time influenced his approach to fashion and inspired him to design clothes for 'the people'. Since establishing the Miyake Design Studio in Tokyo in 1970, he has consistently researched materials and technologies. His first Paris collection was shown in 1973 and since 1977 has exhibited internationally in museums. His approach to clothing combines a respect for tradition with technological experimentation.

Mens loose fitting Issey Miyake casual bomber style jacket with long sleeves made of black cotton nylon blend jersey. The right front is decorated with a rubber transfer of an abstract web design. The jacket has a centre metal zip fastening that extends to the neck and a left zippered breast pocket with two vertical zippered pockets just above the waistline. The jacket is unlined.
