These Beta Cam cassette tapes contain official footage of the opening ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, held on 13 September 2000 at Stadium Australia, Homebush Bay. Copied by the Olympic Coordinating Authority (OCA) for the Powerhouse Museum, these tapes are to be reserved as master copies, while VHS tapes are attached to the blue file for research purposes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) holds ownership rights to this footage, and Museum collection files document the strict conditions for broadcasting.

In 1996, the Sydney Olympic Broadcasting Organisation (SOBO) was established as the 'Host broadcaster' of the 2000 Olympic Games. Its corporate mission was to 'provide outstanding levels of service to Rights Holding Broadcasters, and to produce more than 3 400 hours of live, visually stunning and technically superior coverage of the Games of the New Millennium'

From 13 September to 1 October 2000, SOBO produced all television and radio coverage of the Olympic events, and provided this to the 200 broadcasters that held rights to the Games. Throughout this period, it employed 3300 local and international staff and remained the largest broadcasting production company in the world. Its coverage of the opening and closing ceremonies was broadcast live to a worldwide audience of 30 billion people.
The footage on these Beta Cam cassette tapes was produced by the Sydney Olympic Broadcasting Organisation to record the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympic Games on 13 September 2000 at Stadium Australia, Homebush Bay, New South Wales, Australia.

The tapes and cases were made by Sony Corporation in Tokyo, Japan.
Copied by the Olympic Coordinating Authority (OCA) for the Powerhouse Museum, these tapes are to be reserved as master copies, while VHS tapes are attached to the blue file for research purposes.
