Object statement
Commemorative mug, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth coronation, ceramic, maker unknown, England, 1937
In Australia the head of state is the British monarch and many Australians have been keen followers of royalty, celebrating births, marriages and coronations and mourning deaths. Despite the distance from Britain Australians followed these key events closely, participating in them as much as possible. Purchasing souvenirs of royal weddings and coronations was a direct way of expressing this interest. This mug commemorating the coronation of George VI and Elizabeth is particularly interesting as it was the result of Edward's abdication five months earlier.
George VI and Elizabeth were crown on 13 May 1937 following the abdication of George's elder brother, Edward, five months earlier.
