The effective interpretation of the objects on display is of ongoing concern to the Museum. From its inception in the 1880s, the Technological Museum sought to have informative and attractive labels. In the aftermath of the second world war, the Museum's director, Arthur Penfold, was keen to refashion the exhibits to demonstrate 'the industrial advance of civilization'. With only limited funds at his disposal, many of the changes were cosmetic: new lighting, linoleum over the bare floor boards and new labels. This label is a good example of the attempt to popularise exhibits and an excellent example of the work of the Museum's then artist, Miss Elma Ham.

The hand painted label is on heavy card and features a water colour painting of a sailing ship. It is mounted on gold coloured backing card.The inscription refers to presentation by
'Mrs J Owen-Jones in Memory of her late husband J. Owen-Jones a lover of sailing ships'.
