Henry Parkes arrived in Sydney in 1839 with his wife and young child, finding work as a labourer and later in a foundry. By 1845 he had set himself up in business in Hunter Street, Sydney. as an ivory turner and importer of fancy goods. Although the business later failed he went on to have a career as a journalist and publisher before being elected to the Legislative Council in 1854. The Museum has a small collection of objects relating to Sir Henry Parkes and his descendents and this beer pump handle is an interesting example of the type of work done during his early working life.
This beer pump handle was made by Henry Parkes. He had arrived in Sydney on 25 July 1839 with his wife and one child. After initially working as a labourer at Regentville and then in Sydney he set up in business in Hunter Street, Sydney, as an ivory turner and fancy goods importer. Initial success led to the establishment of branches in Maitland and Geelong, however both these businesses failed and by 1850 he was in financial difficulties.
