Swatchbook, Japanese brocade patterns and fabric samples, card / fabric, Ikeda, Kyoto, Japan, c. 1887
Consists of a gold brocade-covered volume of twenty-eight gilt-edged cardboard sheets taped together to form a concertina album containing Japanese fabric samples. The inside cover pages are covered with foiled paper. The samples are of varying sizes and include mostly silk brocades, in addition to some patchwork pieces of plain and patterned fabrics and embroidered silks with gold thread. Each sample features a Japanese caligraphic inscription of the left of each fabric sample.
