Object statement
Helmet, New South Wales Fire Brigade, brass / leather, made by Rider and Bell, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 1890-1900
In colonial NSW firefighting was undertaken by volunteer brigades whose ability to respond to serious fires could vary. By the late 1800s therefore the need for a professional fire fighting organisation was recognised. On 14 February 1884 the Metropolitan Fire Brigade -- the precursor to the New South Wales Fire Brigade -- was formed in Sydney. With professionalisation came proper equipment and this helmet is a fine example of the protective headgear provided to firemen in the NSW Brigade.
