These posters document two stage productions at Sydney's Genesian Theatre. Formed in 1944, the Genesian Theatre Company has been located since 1954 in a former church at 420 Kent Street, Sydney. Associated with the Catholic Church, it took its name from Saint Genesius, the patron saint of actors. Over the years the Genesian Theatre Company has provided a training ground for young actors and a stage for established members. Many well know actors obtained experience with the Genesians, including Judi Farr, Tony Ward, John Bell, Peter Carroll, Angela Punch-McGregor, Bryan Brown, Tony Murphy, Julie McGregor and Sarah Chadwick. The posters document productions by Shakespeare and Ben Jonson. They pre-date the rise of vernacular Australian drama in the late 1960s and 1970s. The posters are significant in their graphic design, with some displaying effective visual communication in a style unique to the period.
