This collection of documents and artefacts provides an insight into how market research, industry and academy collaborations, and the process of industrial design 'work' to develop a universal and everyday product (a toothbrush).

Of particular historical significance, the collection illustrates how product design proceeds cautiously and how it can be influenced by professional interests (e.g. dentists).

'Project Saturn' was the first in-depth study in Australia on the industrial design aspects of the development of user home care oral hygiene and dental health devices, with particular reference to the development of a new toothbrush and associated products.

The documents and artefacts in this collection are intended to be used as a design resource for study and research, especially in the field of the development of new user home care oral hygiene and dental health products. Drawings are all dated 22.10.85.

Project Saturn was an industrial design research program conducted by John Redmond and Jonathon Talbot and prepared for Unisearch Pty Ltd (The University of New South Wales) on behalf of Johnson and Johnson (Australia) Pty Ltd. The initial work was carried out in May and October 1984, however the associated designs, product development, and research data cover the period 1966-1991.

Saturn Project was the name given to a project that examined the industrial design aspects of the development of user home care oral hygiene and dental health devices, with particular reference to the development of a new toothbrush and associated products.

In correspondence with the curator, Professor Redman advises that the term 'Project Saturn' was a code name devised to ensure internal and external security of the project. There is no significance attached to the name of the project.
