Health and safety organisations typically use a variety of strategies to get their messages across to the general public, from posters to roadside billboards, from radio and television announcements to stalls at shopping centres and fairs. Free booklets and pamphlets carry take-home information - but where should the householder keep them for quick reference in an emergency? The owners of this particular set of booklets logically decided that the family car was the appropriate place to store advice on first-aid, accident-scene procedures, drink-driving, holiday safety and venomous bites. Their glove-box accumulation from the 1980s augments the Museum's collection of material documenting the constants and variables in approaches to accidents and emergencies over the years.

The booklet was produced by the Department of Public Health New South Wales. Its section on water safety was prepared in conjunction with the Royal Life Saving Society NSW Branch. It was printed by V.C.N. Blight, Government Printer NSW and authorized by the Minister for Health NSW. The printer's code on the back cover suggests that it was published in '11/69', that is, November 1969.

'Holiday safety' was amongst a collection of other safety and first aid booklets kept in the glove-box of the donor's family car since the 1980s.

This 28-page booklet has a blue cover with graphics of insects, snake, sun and man performing resuscitation. It provides advice on first aid for common holiday injuries, water safety, snake and other bites, safe use of firearms, camping hygiene, and food poisoning.
