The announcement on 23 September 1993 that Sydney had been selected to host the 2000 Olympic Games was greeted by the local media with enthusiasm. This placard, printed by the Sydney Morning Herald on the day after the announcement, features the banner, "Games Special, We Win". It was mounted on foam board and kept in the SOCOG office as a souvenir of the successful bid. It is a record of an historical moment and captures the sense of elation that swept the community when the announcement was made.
