Women's blouse, 1950 - 1955
zoom image

Object statement
Blouse, womens, embroidered silk crepe, maker unknown, Hong Kong, 1950-1959.
This blouse is a good example of a Western style blouse made in Hong Kong during the 1950s. By the 1950s Hong Kong had become an International commercial centre with many British, Americans and Australians making their home there. The tailors and dressmakers of Hong Kong soon began producing Western style clothing for this market. This blouse is a nice blend of Western style with a very Chinese design of two dragons embroidered on the front.
This blouse was made in Hong Kong in the early 1950s.
The donor was well travelled and in 1947 stayed in Peking with friends. She then moved to Hong Kong and lived in Kowloon between 1948 and 1952. She married her husband who was a Cathay pilot during this time and moved back to Australia in 1952 when she became pregnant.
