This Wynall bicycle is representative of an Australian made bicycle of the late 1930s produced by one of the oldest established NSW companies associated with the bicycle trade - Bennett & Barkell (established 1884). Wynall Cycles appears to be one of several Australian bicycle manufacturing companies that enjoyed a long production run for their product- from the 1920s until the 1980s. This bicycle also shows the style of work done by bicycle shops in the 1960s in refurbishing older bicycles and the additions to give the appearance of a current product of the 1960s. As this bicycle has been owned by three members of the one family since new it has an excellent provenance and shows the use and reuse bicycles enjoyed from the 1930s to the 1960s at least.

Wynall bicycles were made by Bennett & Barkell in Sydney commencing in the 1920s. Bennett & Barkell had been suppliers to the cycle trade since 1884. About 1933 the bicycles were produced under the business name 'Wynall Cycles' and the location of the business was Goulburn Street, Sydney. It appears that Wynall bicycles were sold throughout NSW and through certain outlets in Melbourne until 1985.

This bicycle was purchased new about 1938 by the donor's father, Arthur Moxon, a motor mechanic, for transport to his workplace, Notson's Service Station, on the corner of Beecroft and Carlingford Roads, Epping, and his home in Victoria Street, Epping. New, the bicycle was painted royal blue with rams-horn handlebars, pull brakes, headlight and bell. The bicycle was subsequently passed on to his eldest son, Arthur, and then to the youngest son, Robert, about 17 years Arthur's junior. In the 1960s Robert decided to have the bicycle refurbished and the bicycle was given to Doug. Inglis at his West Ryde cycle shop to redo the paint work. Hence, the D.M.I logos. As a part of the refurbishment a geared hub with drum brake was fitted into the rear wheel. The handle bars were changed for the wider style and the lighting set, currently fitted, was added. The 'wing nuts' fitted to the front axle and the side stand were also added by Robert. After some use the bicycle was stored in the garage of Arthur Moxon at his home at Epping until its donation to the Museum.

28" man's bicycle painted in iridescent mid-red with white lining; the top tube has a decal "special racer" in white on a red scroll on a red lined white background; the down tube has a decal "D.M.I." in white and red on a red lined white background and the seat tube has a decal "supplied by D.M. Inglis / West Ryde" in red on a white background. These white areas on the frame tubes are bordered at the ends in blue. The steering head has a decal "D.M.I." in red on white on a blue background. The bicycle is fitted with a drum brake on the rear wheel and a rim brake on the front. Gears are fitted in the rear hub and a gear selector is fitted to the right handlebar. Mudguards are fitted and painted in the same mid red as the frame and with white and blue lining. two chromed four-point stars are fitted to the front of the front mudguard. a lighting set is fitted consisting of a generator affixed to the front left fork, a chromed headlight attached to a bracket off the front of the gooseneck and a chromed taillight affixed to the right seat stay. Toe clips with leather straps are fitted to the pedals. a side stand is fitted on the left hand side, forward of the rear wheel. The wheel rims are painted the same mid red as the frame, with white lining.
