Object statement
Mosaic, in 5 panels, tilled " The Spirit of God hovered brooding over the face of the waters", glass / ceramic tile / pottery / slate / wood, designed and made by Mary Hall, Sydney, 1984
Winner of the Blake Prize, 1984. In the Craft Survey Exhibition 1988
(from notes supplied by the artist): materials: base is formwork ply (new)
Frame is mild steel strip painted in black satin enamel
Glue for frame to base -- araldite
for tesserao to base: ceramafix and araldite.
Grout: polyester resin and pigment. Ply base is screened to reinforcement from front. Screws are 12 gauge steel. Reinforcement on back: timber -- merantim
Made in 1984
This mosaic won the Blake Prize in 1984, and toured after the showing in Sydney in October 1984 to Melbourne, Wagga, Tamworth and Brisbane, and hung in St John Baptist Church, Canberra, in June and July 1985. Description
Five rectangular mosaic panels each comprised of multiple small darkly colored squares of glass, ceramic and slate tiles on various levels in matt and gloss finishes, in a variety of textures, creating a three dimensional aesthetic to the work, paying homage to the artists interpretation of the first verse of Genesis, articulated by the artist as;
Â?In the beginning god created heavens and the earth and the earth was in no order or direction and there was darkness over the abyss and the spirit of God hovered brooding over the face of the waters".
A wooden plaque, painted white with black text quotes the artists rendering of Genesis which accompanies the five mosaic panels.

The reverse of each panel details the title of the work, Â?The Spirit of God hovered brooding over the face of the waters" the artists name, address and phone number, dimensions, weight and assemble order, printed in black marker on a painted white background. See parts for specifications.
