This photograph of H.C. Russell is a large print of the photograph taken in January 1898 by the commercial photographer J. Hubert Newman. A cabinet photograph of the same portrait is also held in the Powerhouse Museum collection (95/239/24).

H.C. Russell, was the Government Astronomer at Sydney Observatory from 1870 -1907. While a copy from the original Newman print this framed image is still significant in that it formed part of the fabric of Sydney Observatory, having hung in the foyer of the Observatory for many years. It is also significant for its relationship to the scientists who played an important part in the development of science in Australia.
