This framed photograph is a portrait of W. Scott who was the first Government Astronomer at Sydney Observatory from 1856-1862. The photograph has been heavily retouched using either conté crayon or charcoal and was taken late in Scott's life, probably in the early 1900s.

The photograph is a rare original record of William Scott, Sydney's first Government Astronomer. Unfortunately the photographer is unknown but the retouching of the print adds to the unique qualities of this print. It is also significant for its relationship to the scientists who played an important part in the development of science in Australia.
