David Johnston was the father of Margaret Preston Johnston who married Lawrence Hargrave on 7 September 1878.

On the front of the mount of this cabinet photo is printed 'THE/ "FALK" STUDIOS/ 496 / GEORGE STREET / SYDNEY'. It has a tissue overlay on which is printed 'Falk / 496 GEORGE ST. / SYDNEY. / Photographer / BY / APPOINTMENT / TO HIS EXCELLENCY / THE GOVERNOR'. Annotation in ink on reverse of mount 'David Johnston/ Father of Margaret / Lawrence Hargrave's wife'.
