Wearable heart rate monitor, 2001
zoom image

Object statement
Wearable heart rate monitor, consisting of transmitter, wristwatch receiver, carry case, instruction manual and packaging, paper / plastic / metal, made by Polar Electro, Finland, 2001
Polar heart rate monitors were first sold in 1982 and since this time have led the development of personal heart rate monitoring technology. The object is an example of this widely used brand of wearable heart rate monitors. This heart rate monitor is an example of wearable bio-feedback electronic technology that is readily available to consumers.

The object is designed for use by both elite athletes and average people. It detects the electrocardiogram, the electronic signal originating from the heart, and displays the heart rate on the wristwatch receiver worn by the athlete. This provides the athlete with instant feedback about their exercise intensity. Athletes can use this information to manage their training most effectively. It is believed that athletes who wish to manage their weight should exercise at approximately 60-70% of their maximum heart rate, but to improve cardio-vascular fitness they should exercise at approximately 70-80% of their maximum heart rate. The heart rate monitor helps athletes to train at the heart rate required to achieve the desired effects. It can be programmed to alert the athlete if their heart rate falls or rises above the desired target zone.
Designed and made by Polar Electro, Finland.
This device was not used. It was designed for use by both elite athletes and the average person.

Description
Wearable heart rate monitor, consisting of transmitter, wristwatch receiver, carry case, instruction manual and packaging, paper / plastic / metal, made by Polar Electro, Finland, 2001.

The transmitter is a black belt that is worn across the front of the chest and held in place by an elastic strap across the back. The transmitter detects the electrocardiogram, the electronic signal originating from the heart, and sends a continuous signal to the receiver using wireless technology. The receiver is a grey and silver wristwatch that displays the heart rate measured by the transmitter. The case is a black semicircular shape made from synthetic canvas material.
