From 1939 the Australian Broadcasting Commission published the 'ABC Weekly', which offered full radio programming information until it ceased publication in most states by 1951. Shortly after television commenced in 1956, the ABC introduced a colour magazine called 'TV News Times' which in 1959 became 'TV Times'. From 1961 radio programs were listed in a separate, weekly 'Radio Program Guide', which expanded to become the 'ABC Radio Guide'. Publication of 'TV Times' ceased in August 1980. Today, the ABC produces the popular '24 Hours' magazine and radio program guide.

Although it was published on behalf of the ABC, 'TV Times' was a lowbrow, popular magazine and carried advertisements. For many years it was a competitor to the similar but more successful 'TV Week'. 'TV Times' was a medium by which the ABC's television public relations and marketing people propagated publicity about personalities and programs. It listed all the week's television programs (including programs shown on the commercial stations) and contained articles about shows and celebrities. Multiple editions were produced for metropolitan and country regions of Australia.

For most Australians, television is part of our daily landscape of news and entertainment. It permeates our culture like no other medium. The programs we watch help to shape our views, and to reflect and define our culture. TV has changed the nature of the modern entertainment industry, impacting on most areas of leisure, especially sport and popular music. With its hunger for ten second grabs, it has altered the nature of politics. It has an influence on everyday life, domesticity, consumption and leisure. It impacts on our aesthetic, ethical and social values. Locally produced shows are set in Australian environments and reflect, challenge, illustrate the diversity of this country's cultural life.
