Howard Auto cultivators were extremely important in the development of horticulture and small scale farming in Australia. They were invented by an Australian , Arthur Clifford Howard in 1921. The Terrier was released in 1952 with a wide range of attachments, such as the sickle mower, spray and dusting outfits, trailer and tool bar. The L series engine was a lightweight, high output 4.2 horsepower engine.

The manual was used by the owner of the rotary hoe to operate and service the "L" series engine. The booklet was purchased together with the rotary hoe in the early 1950s. There has only been one owner, Mr Leo Sommer.

The 32-page manual contains drawings, photographs and text relating to the "L" Series engine. It has a grey thick paper cover carrying the words 'Instruction book & spare parts list "L"SERIES ENGINE. Manufactured by Howard Auto-Cultivators Ltd. Windsor Road, Northmead, NSW., Australia. The cover has been stained by a dark liquid.
