Object statement
Trousers, childs, embroidered green silk, Shanghai, China, 1900 - 1925
Divided trousers such as this pair have been worn by children in China for many centuries. Symbolism and superstition play an important part in Chinese life, especially when children are involved. Consequently a child's clothing was decorated with flowers, fruit, animals and insects, each endowed with protective properties to ward off evil, and well as to bring the child success in the future.

With the influence of the West and the increased use of nappies during the second half of the 20th century, divided trousers such as these have been replaced with Western style trousers and playsuits.
This pair of children's trousers were made in Shanghai, China. It is not know who made this garment.

This style of divided trousers have been worn by children in China for centuries. They are illustrated in a children's primer dating from 1436. The open area around the crotch and buttocks allowed for easy toilet hygiene. Everyday trousers were usually made of cotton while silk was kept for special occasions such as a child's first birthday. On such occasions the trousers would have been worn a silk embroidered jacket usually in red or pink, decorated shoes and a hat. The decorative motifs on children's wear were all symbolic. Each flower, fruit and creature represented a wish for protection from evil spirits and a long and successful life for the child.
These trousers were purchased by the curator in a market in Shanghai, China in 1996 on behalf of museum.
