History notes

Apart from a small sum of money which was made available to Captain Phillip apparently for the payment of port dues during the voyage to Botany Bay, such other money as was carried within the First Fleet was generally privately owned by individuals. No provision was made for the official circulation of coinage within the new settlement as, in the circumstances of its establishment, this was not considered to be necessary. The coins displayed are typical of those likely to have been distributed throughout the Fleet, and used in the early days of the settlement at Sydney Cove.
