Token, penny, surcharged, copper, used by Annand Smith & Co [and F. Cade], Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 1848-1862, minted at the [Soho Mint], Birmingham, England, 1848
The token was minted at a private mint in Birmingham, England in 1848 for Annand, Smith & Co. The mint was possibly the Soho Mint, owned by Matthew Boulton.
Tokens were used in Victoria from 1849 to 1862. The token was used by the grocery store Annand, Smith & Co as small change. The partnership was finished by 1852. The token was subsequently used by F. Cade.

Token, penny, surcharged, copper, used by Annand Smith & Co [and F. Cade], Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 1848-1862, minted at the [Soho Mint], Birmingham, England, 1848

Round copper penny. The obverse has the legend 'ANNAND SMITH & CO / .MELBOURNE. / CADE FAMILY GROCERS'. There is beading near the rim. The reverse has the central effigy of a draped female figure in helmet and carrying a trident (Britannia) seated on a shield facing left. She sits above waves and a ship is to the left in the background. The legend is 'BRITANNIA'. The edge is plain.
