Object statement
Packaged soap (4), 'Sunlight', paper / soap, made by Lever Brothers Pty Ltd, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, date unknown
The soap was made by Lever Brothers Pty Limited in Sydney, New South Wales.
William Hesketh Lever is credited with being the first person to imprint a brand name on a bar of soap, which was then packaged before sale. As such the now famous Sunlight soap began sale in 1885. Originally made in the UK, Lever soon targeted other countries in which to market Sunlight soap. Lever Brothers established their first factory in Australia in Balmain, Sydney, 1899, producing its first bar of Sunlight soap in 1900.
In 1962 Lever Brothers Pty Ltd merged with J. Kitchen & Sons Pty Ltd to form Lever & Kitchen Pty Ltd.
