Started in 1879, the collection captures the ideas and technologies that have changed our world and the stories of the people who created them. As well as adding objects of significance to the collection, the Museum has the enormous task of maintaining and conserving the objects under its care.

Cylinder slide rule in box, 'Fullers Spiral', wood / paper / brass, Stanley, London, England, after 1878
Two cylindrical tubes marked covered with lacquered paper printed with logarithmic tables. The cylinders, one inside the other, have handles at each end. A metal pointer and gauge allow readings to be taken from the rule.

Marks
Two labels are pasted inside the lid of the box. The first label gives the name and address of the instrument supplier, printed in black on paper "Instrument No.../ FROM E.ESDAILE,/ 54 HUNTER STREET, SYDNEY/ MAKER AND IMPORTER OF/ SURVEYING, MATHEMATICAL & OPTICAL INSTRUMENTS/ Repairs of any kind to any make of Instrument by/ experienced workmen./ Agent for/ TROUGHTON & SIMMS./ E.R. WATTS & SON./ THOS. COOKE 7 SON./ OTT PLANIMETERS & PANTAGRAPHS./ CHESTERMAN'S & RABONE'S TAPES & CHAINS".
The second label is printed with the name and address of the instrument manufacturer, in silver on blue paper "STANLEY,/ GREAT TURNSTILE/ LONDON/ ENGLAND".
