Books were kept in France/Belgium.
Sergeant William Jones worked in the 2nd Australia Casualty Clearing Station, which operated in Egypt, Somalia, and France (Rouen, Trois Arbres, Armentieres, St Omeir, Alsace-Lorraine) during WWI.
According to Major Pat Boland, if a soldier was admitted to CCS they were usually in a very bad way. The procedure would have been to cut off and burn the uniform, and it was probably at this stage that the badges etc were souvenired. The widow of Sgt Jones stated that the cloth background of the panel was so soaked with blood that it took her two weeks of laundering to get it clean (noted in archive information).
