Object statement
Model of a 16th century armed ship from the Port of Ragusa in the Adriatic. Rigged with full sail and carrying 12 guns. Made to scale by Mr I Karnincich from plans prepared by M M Stumberger. Size of model 30" x 29 1/2' x 9 1/2" (SB).
The carrick was highly significant as the workhouse merchantman of the 15th and 16th Century in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Among famous carricks are the "Victoria" of Magellan, and the "Santa maria" of Columbus.
Model made by Mr. I. Karnincich. Plans supplied to Mr. Karnincich by the Navy Marine Institute of Yugoslavia. Plans originally drawn up by Mr Miroslav Shlumberger.
The carrack or nau was a three or four masted ocean- going sailing ship developed in 15th Century Western Europe for use in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean. They were the ships in which the Portuguese and the Spanish explored the world in the 15th and 16th centuries. The type developed from the typically Northern square rig and typically Southern lateen rig to yield the usual carrack with high rounded stern, large aftcastle and forecastle, bowsprit at the stern, with a square-rigged foremast and mainmast, and lateen -rigged mizzenmast. The carrack was suited to both coastal and open sea sailing ,and its' deep bulging hold could carry substantial cargo. The fore and aft castles sited cannon for defense, rendering the carrick the rating of well armed merchantmen. The carrack was the forerunner of the typical 18th Century 3-master , which in turn was displaced by the advent of the steam engine.
