The model was made by Bassett Lowke Ltd., Northampton, which has a long history of manufacturing model ships and trains. The company produced a model fleet of every class in the British Navy from 1885 through 1916, including tugs, troopships and the royal yacht. During WW11, wood and wire ship models in the 1:1200 scale were issued under Bassett-Lowke sponsorship for military contracts . These models were highly detailed and command a high price from collectors.
MV "Britannic", otherwise known as RMS "Britannic", was an ocean liner of the White Star Line, the company's third ship to bear the name. She was built by Harland & Wolff Ltd. In Belfast, launched 6th August 1929 and made her first maiden voyage from Liverpool to New York in June 1930. At 26943 gross tonnage, the "Britannic" was the largest motor driven vessel of her day and the first British motor driven passenger liner specifically designed for the Atlantic run. She was powered by four stroke cycle double acting Burmeister & Wain twin diesel ten cylinder engines. Following the 1934 merger of the White Star Line and Cunard, the "Britannic" serviced the London- le Havre-Southampton-New York route. During WW11, she was used as a troop carrier, carrying about 5000 troops per voyage ,compared to peace time carrying capacity of 1500, in all transporting 180,000 troops during the period of the war. In that time she was attacked once by Italian aircraft in the Mediterranean, and by submarine and aircraft attack when in convoy in the Atlantic. Returning to peacetime travel in 1948, after an extensive refit, she serviced the Liverpool to New York route. During her later years, she was used as a part time cruise ship, her career emding December 1960 when she was consigned to be scrapped at Inverkeithing, Scotland.
