Object statement
Satellite replica, Vanguard 1, wood / metal, made by the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 1958
This replica was constructed by the Museum in 1958 shortly after the launch of the Vanguard 1 satellite.
This replica may have been used with the Sputnik model in 1958 in an exhibition illustrating satellite motion.

The Vanguard 1 (also known as Vanguard TV-4 and The Grapefruit) was originally intended to be the first American satellite, however launch failures caused it to be launched after Explorer 1. Vanguard 1 was equipped for measuring temperatures and geodetic surveys and enabled the shape of the Earth to be determined with precision for the first time. It transmitted until 1964 but remains in orbit.
