Kimono, figured silk/silk and metallic thread embroidery, Japan, 1920-1925
The shishi lion and peony flower depicted together in Japanese art represent the "king of the beasts" and "queen of the flowers" respectively.

Description
Kimono, dark blue figured satin embroidered with a design of large peony flowers worked in shades of orange & silver grey silk threads, green leaves and couched gold thread embroidered stems and leaves. five small silk and gold thread embroidered motifs of playing shishi lions worked at front and back shoulders and centre back neck. Thick padded rolled hem and padded rolled sleeve opening. Fully lined with tangerine orange silk.
