Object statement
Ship model, passenger steamer S.S. "Nieuw Amsterdam" construction. (OF) Previously Loan 806 (OF)
The "Nieuw Amsterdam" was known as "The Darling of the Netherlands " ,and was widely known for her Art Deco interior decorations and exterior design. The ship saw estensive war sevice as a troop carrier, transporting over 350,000 troops during the 1939-45 war.
Made by Mr. D. Gibbs, 1 Asher St., Coogee.
Model built by Mr. D. Gibbs.
The "Nieuw Amsterdam" ,36287 gross tons, was built in Rotterdam by the Rotterdam Drydock Company and launched in April 1937 by Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. She followed the Art Deco trend of the day in both interior decorations and exterior design. She was known then as the "Ship of Peace " and post 1939-45 war as "The Darling of the Netherlands". In 1940 the "Nieuw Amsterdam" was refitted as a troop carrier and during the course of the war would transport over 350,000 troops and steam some 530,452 nautical miles before being returned to Holland in 1946. Afrer refitting as a liner and removing her 36 guns, the "Nieuw Amsterdam" returned tothe transatlantic run. With the increasing competition from transatlantic air travel, the ship was transferred to cruising in the Caribbean ,before eventually being broken up in Taiwan in 1974.
